When people think of going for a general dentist visit, they usually think that the main purpose is to shine up their teeth and get a more in-depth floss. However, general dentists perform several vital tasks during these appointments and take measurements to add to the patient’s history. Changes in these measurements over time can indicate a growing problem that needs to be addressed. This is why attending general dentist visits consistently is essential.
If you are overdue for your next appointment, it is never too late to schedule! Things that you can expect from a standard dentist visit include scaling, polishing, and undergoing a manual exam, among others.
What a general dentist can do for patients
Everything that a general dentist does is to ensure that a patient’s mouth is healthy. To preserve the long-term wellness of the teeth, gums, and oral cavity, the dentist will usually perform the following tasks during a routine appointment.
Scaling
When dentists are doing scaling, they use hook-like metal tools. These implements are strong enough to remove built-up tartar on the teeth, which ordinary toothbrushes cannot eliminate. The metal hooks chip the tartar off the teeth so it cannot continue to provide a haven for bacteria and their acidic waste, which damages the enamel.
Polishing
Many people enjoy the polishing stage of a dental appointment. The dentist uses a rotating implement to brush the patient’s teeth with a specialized compound (usually in a flavor of the patient’s choice). This polish is slightly grittier than regular toothpaste, enabling it to smooth the tooth surface and create a brilliant shine.
Not only is polishing valuable for a radiant smile, but it also helps reduce bacterial buildup after the appointment. Bacteria colonies have a more challenging time forming on a smooth surface.
Flossing
The dentist will thoroughly floss the teeth to ensure that the bacteria between them are adequately removed. They will also test whether teeth enable floss to pass and can modify the shape of the teeth if an area is inaccessible. At this stage, the dentist may take extra time to measure gum pockets, which can reveal the beginnings of gingivitis.
Manual exam
Near the end of a dentist visit, the dentist will typically perform a manual exam, using their fingers to palpate the patient's gums, tongue, and cheeks. They are looking for signs of issues like oral cancer, which benefit from treatment as early as possible.
Fluoride treatment
Before patients leave the office, they may receive a fluoride treatment. Fluoride can strengthen the enamel and make it more resistant to cavities. The dentist paints a special liquid onto the teeth, and the patient has to wait for a few minutes while it absorbs. Then, the patient can rinse and be on their way!
