Oral Surgery Procedures from a General Dentist You May Not Know

General Dentist Mt Pleasant, WI

A general dentist is known to be the first point of contact when it comes to routine oral health, such as check-ups, cleanings, and common procedures like filling placement. However, what many do not know is that general dentists can also perform oral surgeries.

Oral surgery from a general dentist

Below is an overview of what it is like to get oral surgery from a general dentist, including some common procedures that are performed. Review this information when trying to have a better understanding of what a general dentist does that is outside the realm of routine work.

Oral surgery procedures

There are a few common oral surgery procedures that a general dentist will and can perform. Outlined below are short descriptions of each.

Tooth extraction

Tooth extraction does not always fall under the category of oral surgery; however, in some cases, it does. For example, wisdom tooth extraction is considered oral surgery because they are typically embedded deep within the jaw, which means there are more steps involved in the removal. Additionally, if there is a severely infected tooth, a general dentist may also consider it oral surgery. Of course, some extractions are straightforward and can be performed in just a few minutes.

Dental implant placement

Another oral surgery that general dentists perform is dental implant placement. Having dental implants placed does mean oral surgery because the gums have to be slightly opened, as well as the bone so the actual implant can be placed. A general dentist may place anywhere from one to four or five in one surgery, depending on how many teeth have to be replaced. Singular implants can be done, as well as four for the use of a partial denture if an entire arch needs to be replaced.

Grafting

Grafting is a less common oral surgery that some general dentists perform. When the gums have undergone severe infection, the result may be receded gums, which can result in the need for a gum graft. General dentists recommend a gum graft if the soft tissue above the teeth has receded so much that the teeth are no longer protected. Tissue from another part of the oral cavity will be placed to refill the emptiness.

Bone grafts, on the other hand, may be required before dental implant surgery. When the jawbone does not have enough density in it to hold implants, a graft is required. Once grafted, the jaw will be able to handle dental implants.
